Making provisions
In the event of a claim for an incident such as a burglary or fire, the insurance company will only pay you compensation if you can prove what you have lost. |
Purchase receipts are considered irrefutable proof. It is important to keep receipts in a safe place, as they could be destroyed in a fire. Therefore, it is worthwhile paying for a safe box at your local bank branch.
With regard to furniture, it is not always possible to determine its value with receipts, as would be the case for second-hand furniture bought at a flea market or the wardrobe inherited from your grandma. For such objects, photos will help your claim, and should also be kept locked away in a bank safe box. When ownership of valuable furniture cannot be confirmed by a receipt, an appraisal (which is inexpensive compared with the loss incurred) or a bailiff's report will need to be prepared.
