The strategic location between Bruges and Sluis also remained Count Philippe of Alsace not unnoticed so he granted in 1180 city rights to the city of Damme. From that moment on, the town developed into a dynamic transhipment port for merchants. Unfortunately, this success was short-lived, because the silting problems in the Zwingeul were discovered. Despite this crisis, the people of Damme built a new town hall between 1464 and 1468.
