Fosteau – Medieval Castle and Its Private Estate
The history of Fosteau dates back to a medieval keep, already mentioned in 1235 in the cartulary of Lobbes Abbey. Over the centuries, it belonged to several prominent figures, including four generations of the Knights of Sars during the 15th and 16th centuries. They notably affixed their seal to the oath sworn to Philip the Good. Jean IV de Sars later became an advisor to Philip the Handsome, and then cupbearer to his son, Charles V.
In the 18th century, the Marquis Adolphe d'Aoust, nicknamed the "Coq d'Aousse" in the novel by Maurice des Ombiaux, also resided there. On the eve of the Battle of Waterloo, Count Reille, one of Napoleon's generals, established his headquarters there at the head of the 2nd Corps, comprising 23,000 soldiers. Finally, on 8 October 1867, Victor Hugo, who visited Fosteau on several occasions, made a drawing of it.
Today, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a witness to a prestigious history.
Located between Mons and Chimay, this castle stands out for its Gothic architecture and remarkably well-preserved towers, set on a 1.34-hectare estate.
With its tree-lined entrance drive and its courtyard of honour, Fosteau is today among the best-preserved lordly estates in the Kingdom. The interiors feature period elements, while the French-style terraced gardens offer views over a pond, woodland and an orchard.
Strategically located in a peaceful setting, less than one hour from Brussels, Lille, Namur and Tournai.
