Founded in 1142 by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, the Cistercian abbey was built around the hermitage of Blessed Hugh the Hermit. It was named "Notre Dame du Reclus" in memory of the holy hermit who came here to lead an isolated life in 1128, soon to be joined by a few companions wishing to imitate his example and share his solitude. They lived in "seclusion", away from the world, isolated from villages and people, devoting themselves to prayer and meditation, in a spirit of penitence and contemplation.
In 1567, during the French Wars of Religion, the monastic complex suffered considerable damage, losing half of its buildings, including the abbey church, which was destroyed and burnt down. Where the nave once stood, the abbots subsequently erected their own residence and the church was rebuilt in 1770.
With the abolition of all monasteries, the French Revolution dealt a fatal blow to the religious history of "Le Reclus" and the abbey was sold as a national property. Restoration work began in 1928 and the complex that can be seen today is almost completely rehabilitated.
Surrounded by a stone wall and patiently restored over several decades by its current owner, the abbey forms a true hamlet with numerous outbuildings, almost all of which have been converted into gîtes (guest houses).

En Champagne, à une demi-heure d'Epernay, une ancienne abbaye cistercienne classée en partie MH et ses gîtes sur 9h.

Fondée en 1142 par Saint-Bernard de Clairvaux, l'abbaye cistercienne est érigée autour de l'ermitage du Bienheureux Hugues-le-Reclus. Il lui donna le nom de "Notre Dame du Reclus" en mémoire du saint ermite venu vers 1128 vivre en solitaire, bientôt rejoint par quelques compagnons désireux d'imiter son exemple et partager sa solitude. Ils vivaient en "reclus", à l'écart du monde, isolés des villages et des hommes, se consacrant à la prière et à la méditation, dans un souci de pénitence et de contemplation.
En 1567, durant les guerres de Religion, les bâtiments conventuels subissent des dégâts considérables et perdent la moitié de ses bâtiments, l'église abbatiale est détruite et incendiée. Sur l'emplacement de la nef, les abbés se construisent un logis abbatial et l'église est reconstruite en 1770.
Avec la suppression de tous les monastères, la Révolution porta le coup fatal à l'histoire religieuse du "Reclus" et l'abbaye fut vendue comme bien national.
Sa restauration débute en 1928 et l'ensemble visible aujourd'hui est presque totalement achevé.
Cernée d'un mur d'enceinte en pierre, patiemment restaurée depuis des décennies par son actuel propriétaire, l'abbaye forme un véritable hameau avec de nombreuses dépendances presque toutes aménagées en gîtes.
Le parc, traversé par une source à ciel ouvert, est complété par une parcelle boisée.
