The nation houses of BrugesBecause Bruges was an important international port and trading metropolis until the end of the 15th century, the city attracted traders from all over Europe. Traders owned their own department stores and nation stores. These houses were the permanent commercial representation of a country within a city, you might call them medieval consulates. Venice, Genoa, and Florence had their nation houses at what was then called the Stock Exchange Square. Not far from there were the buildings of Lucca, Catalonia, Castile and Leon, Portugal, England and Scotland. The office of the German Hanseatic League was called the Eastern House. All of these houses were located near the port and were among the most impressive in the city.
